CCV Numbers

Why Collect the CCV Number?

Many online vendors are now requiring that a CCV number be submitted in an effort to increase the security of online credit card transactions.  The CCV number is a three or four digit number found on the back of the credit card.  This number is not printed anywhere else, therefore making it difficult for anyone other than the genuine cardholder to know it.

The CCV number is not the same as a password as it does not provide access to any personal information.  Unlike a password, the CCV number is physically present on the credit card and therefore available to anybody who is in possession of the card.

Requiring the CCV number cannot protect against all credit card fraud, but this fraud protection system does ensure that someone cannot use your credit card number without also knowing the CCV number, which generally means the person would physically have the card.
